Minneapolis: Home of Prince & Paisley Park

This tour includes access to studios A, B and C, a private screening of exclusive footage in the editing suite, a special audio playback session and access to archives not available on the two other tours. Light beverages are served at the conclusion of the tour. Genius does not always come linked to this sort of self-possession.

From child prodigy to bandleader

Prince wrote often and eagerly about the idea of sanctuary—places where his spiritual anxieties were assuaged. Back then, Paisley Park was merely an imagined paradise. “Paisley Park is in your heart,” he sings on the chorus. Tickets will only be honored for the date and time listed on the ticket.

At the time his family lived in an apartment at 2201 Fifth Ave, just a 10-minute walk from the now closed Mount Sinai Hospital at which he was born. The 10-unit, three-story building still standing at that address is the same building the family lived in for the first six months of the musician’s life—it was built in 1929 and has been unchanged since. In 1959, Prince’s family moved to 915 Logan Avenue North in 1959, though little is known about that property because it’s since been demolished and replaced with a different home. Prince was the kind of guy that liked to get up close and personal with fans. And what better way to appreciate the performer's talent than in a small club setting? Paisley Park's NPG Music Club allowed visitors to experience the subtle shades of Prince's talent in an intimate setting that was pretty much his own private nightclub.

A fan’s diary entry left at the Purple Rain house

Though the house appears quite traditional from the outside, recent listing photos shared by Storeys reveal an interior that is about half traditional and half postmodern, replete with chrome accents and glass blocks in some rooms. It’s hard to say what exactly was on offer in the way of amenities during Prince’s time there, but nowadays there’s a full hair salon, home gym, and a tennis court. Conde Nast Traveler reports that Paisley Park has a Purple Rain Room that's almost womb-like in its cocoon-style ambiance. Purple ripples of light are projected on the walls, and the room pays homage to all things "Purple Rain," featuring the bike, jacket, and guitar made legendary in the film. If that weren't enough purple for one day, the room also plays the song "Purple Rain" on a seven-minute loop.

The hallway outside Studio A contains a long sunset-colored mural that Prince had commissioned. On the left, you will see images of Prince-influenced artists like Lisa and Wendy from The Revolution, Cat Glover, Apollonia, Vanity 6, Morris Day and The Time, Sheila E., and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds. The mural’s right side depicts the artists that greatly influenced Prince, such as Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and Chaka Khan. The soundstage at Paisley Park was almost entirely used to film Graffiti Bridge, the sequel to Purple Rain. In addition to Grumpy Old Men (the movie), McDonald’s, Porsche, and the Muppets, the space has also been used for filming or rehearsal.

Guests may also select special tour experiences that include unique photo opportunities. Named after the Prince song "Paisley Park" and the now defunct record label, the production complex features recording studios, a nightclub, rehearsal space, offices, and private space for the award-winning musician. In the NPG Music Club Room, where we were invited to take a seat on the plush purple couches, you could again sense Prince, the cosmic genius performer. The ceilings soared, but the room felt small and intimate and it was nearly as dark as Miho had described.

On the shelves were various picture frames and a long leafy plant that hung off the edge. During a video chat with the charity Smart Works, Meghan showed another area of her Montecito home. The duchess sat in front of a gorgeous stone fireplace, which displayed a vintage print of a bear holding the state of California. The artwork is taken from the cover of the sheet music for "I Love You, California."

The massive multi-tiered backyard space can be accessed from the main and lower floors. There are several classical water features and statues, like a large circular fountain. Stone steps lead you to the main pavilion, which features another pool and spa, outdoor dining and lounging, and a vine-covered pool house. It’s surrounded by landscaped lawns and exotic plants and flanked by mature redwood trees. Yes, there are limited opportunities for philanthropic organizations to receive a tour to provide for a group who would be otherwise unable to attend. These tours will be planned not to disrupt the existing tour schedule and will only be given out upon request.

Who owns Paisley Park now?

The Prince Estate passionately presents Prince’s life and work, and cultivates opportunities to further his legacy. We aim to immerse fans, old and new, in Prince’s story, explore the role of Prince and his work in today’s cultural landscape, and safeguard the integrity of Prince’s artistic vision. During the production of “Purple Rain,” Price came up with the idea of Paisley Park. Named after the Prince song “Paisley Park,” which includes lyrics like “Come 2 the park/And play with us/There are no rules/In Paisley Park,” the campus was opened in 1987 for $10 million and 65,000 square feet.

He paid $117,000 cash for the humble 1,300-square-foot property over 30 years after filming his iconic rock drama there in the ’80s. At the time of his death, Prince owned millions of dollars in property across Minnesota. Prince’s second wife, Manuela Testolini, was a native Torontonian, so naturally he purchased a Canadian pad. The couple were married between the years of 2001 and 2006, and this is reportedly the same time span during which he owned the sprawling 14,000-square-foot home.

Unbeknownst to most, Prince’s former home and recording studio, “Paisley Park,” is now a museum, and you can take a tour. Knowing that I would visit, I did not read any reviews before I visited. I wanted to experience it for myself and form my own opinions. Fans can take tours of the complex and view his personal archives, including iconic concert wardrobe, awards, musical instruments, and unique artwork. Prince was born Prince Rogers Nelson, in 1958, in Minneapolis. He was named—in a way—for his father, John Nelson, a pianist who performed as Prince Rogers.

Many of Prince’s elaborate stage costumes are on display here. His outfits were often custom-made, and the craftsmanship and whimsy involved in their construction is staggering. I spent a good ten minutes sizing up a pair of sparkling flared pants, suède-heeled boots, and a generously ruffled shirt, all in the same immodest shade of cherry red—an outfit too bold and spectacular to imagine anyone else wearing. They’re relics of his professional, public life—proof of a groundbreaking career. Though Prince never lived there, he purchased the home featured in Purple Rain in 2015, the year before his passing.

This just might be the only home in Turks and Caicos with a purple driveway. Prince bought his Turks and Caicos estate in 2011, going on to purchase two adjacent parcels of land to create an even bigger property that totals over five acres and 1,625 feet of private ocean frontage. The property sold in 2019 for $10.8 million after a couple years on the market and is now available as a vacation rental, with the iconic purple driveway still intact. Prince was a pretty far-out guy, even by the fast and loose standards of the music industry. So it's only fitting that Paisley Park has a Galaxy Room.

British designer Gavin Brodin led the estate’s revamp, who has worked with Rod Stewart, Sylvester Stallone, and billionaires to create their dream homes, and he struck the perfect balance between modern living and traditional design. Prince often referred to Paisley Park in songs and interviews, even before the building was constructed. The rich narrative that Prince built around Paisley Park positions it as much a concept and myth as it is physical space.

Paisley Park is an active museum, state-of-the-art recording studio and concert venue in Chanhassen, MN. For nearly 30 years, the facility served as Prince’s home, creative sanctuary and production complex. The steps that once led to the farmhouse where Alec grew up are still there. A large visible hole in the ground marks the place where his house used to be, a cavernous impression in the ground. Back here, probably a quarter mile from the road, the air was deeply silent.
